The Granite School District board left its Millcreek-area seat empty after adjourning the Tuesday, Sept. 1 meeting without appointing a replacement.

The board had been expected to choose a new Precinct I member at the meeting, which was scheduled to include second-round interviews with four finalists. Instead, the district posted a notice on its website stating the board immediately adjourned after a closed executive session and took no action.

No explanation for the adjournment has been made public.

The seat opened after board member Julie Jackson announced at the Aug. 4 meeting that she had won a primary election for the Utah House of Representatives and was unopposed in the general election. Board President Nicole McDermott accepted Jackson's resignation effective Dec. 31, 2026, and the board set an application window from Aug. 5 through Aug. 19.

The board interviewed eleven candidates at the Aug. 25 meeting, held at the Granite Education Center on South State Street in Salt Lake City. All seven board members were present. After scoring, Superintendent Ben Horsley announced that "based on scoring, there is a natural break" separating the top four finalists: Elena Leppard, Marilyn Taft, Benjamin Ungricht and Janelle Williamson. The board unanimously agreed to bring them back for second interviews on Sept. 1.

Board member Clarke Nelson raised concerns during the Aug. 25 session about the legal requirements for how the board picks top candidates, saying he hoped for changes to those regulations.

The Precinct I seat covers Millcreek-area schools. Jackson continues to serve until her resignation takes effect at the end of December.

The district's online calendar does not list another board meeting date in September beyond the Sept. 1 session. No timeline for rescheduling the appointment has been announced.
