Drivers on 2000 East will move to freshly paved lanes on the west side Saturday, Aug. 29. Millcreek is wrapping up one half of a major road rebuild and sending crews to begin tearing up the other.

The city announced the traffic shift on its official X account Thursday, Aug. 27, saying the west side of 2000 East is nearly complete. Once vehicles move over, construction begins on the east side of the corridor.

Millcreek urged drivers to pay extra attention while passing through the work zone during the transition.

Why the rebuild

The 2000 East project aims to improve safety and add active-transportation infrastructure along the corridor. The city said in a May 5 post that the work mirrors a completed Phase I project on the south end of 2000 East. That earlier phase added protected bike lanes and pedestrian improvements to the stretch south of the current construction zone.

The city acknowledged in that same post that the corridor "looks a bit chaotic right now" but said the disruption serves the project's safety goals.

What drivers have dealt with

The project has reshaped traffic patterns for months. According to a March 31 city post, 2000 East between 2700 South and 3300 South was restricted to one-way southbound flow starting as early as Monday, April 6. Detour routes ran along 1300 East, 2300 East and connecting streets near I-80.

Saturday's shift to the newly paved west lanes signals progress but does not mark the end. Drivers should expect continued construction activity on the east side for an unspecified period.

What's still unknown

Millcreek has not announced a completion date for the east-side work or a timeline for full reopening of the road. The city also has not restated the exact block limits for Saturday's traffic shift. Residents can follow @MillcreekUT on X or check millcreekut.gov for updates.
