Skyline football ran through Region 10 without a loss, beating Murray in a blowout at home Wednesday, Oct. 14, to claim the Eagles' first outright region championship since 2004.
The win capped a 5-0 region record for first-year head coach Brandon Matich and gave Skyline its first region title of any kind since 2013, according to a Deseret News roundup. The game's final score was not immediately available.
Both teams entered the finale at 7-3 overall, according to the Deseret News, though MaxPreps listed Skyline at 6-3 overall and 5-0 in region play before the Murray game. The region record is consistent across both sources.
The title run gained momentum Thursday, Oct. 8, when Skyline traveled to Highland and beat the defending region champion 37-23. That game featured a safety by each team, a 56-yard run by senior running back Jonah Mailei and a pick six from Will Finau that sealed the win with just over four minutes left, as the Deseret News reported.
"Skyline has had a hard time getting over this Highland hump, and they were able to do it tonight," Matich said after the Highland win on Oct. 8.
Mailei, an Honorable Mention All-State selection last season, had returned from a multi-week injury for that game. His presence opened things up for quarterback Tate Johnson, a transfer from Mountain View who threw for 1,973 yards and 18 touchdowns at his previous school in 2025, according to the Deseret News.
Matich's path back to Skyline carries its own weight. He started his coaching career at the school coaching linebackers in 1997 under Hall of Fame head coach Roger DuPaix, according to the Millcreek Journal. He went on to coach at Park City and then spent 15 seasons as head coach at East High School, compiling a 138-60 record and winning two state titles in 2015 and 2016.
When the preseason Region 10 coaches poll placed Skyline first in August, Matich deflected.
"I'm surprised Highland is not the favorite," he told the Deseret News at the time. "They won it last year, which until they are knocked off, they deserve to be favored."
His Eagles knocked them off. Then they finished the job against Murray.
Skyline now turns to the 4A state playoffs. The UHSAA bracket reveal is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m. on KSLsports.com, with brackets and final rankings available on UHSAA.org at 11 a.m.
