Skyline landed the No. 6 seed in the Class 4A state football tournament and will host No. 11 Pine View at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
The Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) released the 16-team bracket Saturday, Oct. 17, pairing the Eagles (7-3) against the Panthers (5-4), according to the Deseret News. This is the first year only the top 16 teams in 4A qualify for the state tournament under the UHSAA's Rating Percentage Index (RPI) system, which the association adopted in 2019.
Skyline finished with a 0.605 RPI, according to the Deseret News final rankings. Pine View posted a 0.564 RPI.
The Eagles enter the postseason on a five-game winning streak after going undefeated in Region 10 at 6-0, according to MaxPreps. Skyline outscored opponents 354-178 across the regular season, capping region play with a 41-7 win over Murray on Oct. 14.
Quarterback Tate Johnson threw three touchdown passes to David Campbell, Xander Mattinson and Will Finau and added a rushing score in a 49-12 win over East on Oct. 2, the Deseret News reported. The following week, Will Finau's 67-yard interception return broke a 23-23 tie with 4:02 remaining and sealed a 37-23 win at Highland, according to KSL.
Skyline's three losses came in nonregion play: 14-10 to Stansbury on Aug. 13, 45-3 to Lone Peak on Aug. 28 and 42-7 at Skyridge on Sept. 11, per MaxPreps.
Pine View, out of Region 9 in St. George, finished 2-3 in league play and fourth in the region standings. The Panthers closed the regular season with a 49-36 loss to Crimson Cliffs on Oct. 14, a game in which sophomore quarterback Coy Doman did not return after taking a hit on Pine View's first possession of the second half, St. George News reported. Doman had thrown for 311 yards in a 45-40 win over Desert Hills the week before.
Head coach Brandon Matich took over the program before this season. He spent 15 seasons as head coach at East High School, compiling a 138-60 record and winning state titles in 2015 and 2016, the Millcreek Journal reported Aug. 4. He started his coaching career at Skyline in 1997, coaching linebackers under Hall of Fame head coach Roger DuPaix. He inherited a roster that lost more than 20 players to graduation from last year's 9-4 squad that reached the 4A quarterfinals.
"We've put in a lot of work this season too," linebacker Nick Tueller told the Skyline Horizon student newspaper in late September, before the Eagles reeled off their final three region wins.
A win over Pine View would send Skyline to a quarterfinal against the winner of No. 3 Stansbury (8-2) and No. 14 Provo. No. 2 Hurricane (9-1) looms in the same half of the bracket. No. 1 Ridgeline (10-0) sits on the opposite side.
Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Skyline High School.
