Millcreek-area residents who want a say in how local schools are run have two weeks to file for an open seat on the Granite School District Board of Education.

The District 1 (Precinct 1) seat will be vacant as of Dec. 31, 2026, and the district posted a notice Aug. 4 inviting candidates to apply. The filing window opened Wednesday, Aug. 5 and closes Wednesday, Aug. 19.

The precinct covers a swath of Millcreek schools, according to the district's board page: Eastwood, Morningside, Oakridge, Penn, Rosecrest and Upland Terrace elementaries; Churchill, Evergreen and Wasatch junior highs; and Skyline High School.

How to file

Candidates must complete four steps by the Aug. 19 deadline:

• Review the position description on the district website.
• File a notarized Declaration of Candidacy form with the Superintendent's office.
• Submit a resume.
• Complete required financial disclosure forms through the Salt Lake County Clerk's EasyVote portal by Aug. 20.

All four steps are required.

The district will verify candidate eligibility with the Salt Lake County Clerk.

Public interviews and appointment

Candidates will sit for public interviews Tuesday, Aug. 25, starting as early as 4 p.m. in Auditorium A at the Granite Education Center during a board meeting open to the public. A second round of interviews may follow on Sept. 1 before the 5 p.m. administrative session.

The board will appoint the new District 1 member on Sept. 1. According to the board's website, the appointed member's term begins in January 2027, when they take the Oath of Office, and runs through Dec. 31, 2028.

Why the seat is open

The current Precinct 1 member is Julie Jackson, whose term was originally set to end Dec. 31, 2028. The district's vacancy notice does not name the departing member or state a reason for the early opening. Jackson is listed as a Democratic candidate for Utah House District 34, which appears to explain the early departure.

The Granite board is also holding a public hearing on a proposed $21 million tax increase on Aug. 18, one day before the candidate filing window closes. Residents interested in both issues can mark the calendar:
