A three-vehicle crash on northbound I-215 West at 2900 South shut down three lanes Friday morning, Sept. 18, leaving one person with life-threatening injuries.

The wreck was one of at least three reported in close succession along the I-215 corridor as storms swept across the Wasatch Front, according to ABC4. The pileup also blocked the right shoulder, choking a stretch of highway that serves as a primary commute route for Millcreek residents heading north or south through the valley.

Utah Highway Patrol officials said the injured person was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, KUTV reported. UHP did not report any other injuries. It was unclear as of Friday afternoon when the closed lanes would reopen.

Two other I-215 crashes happened nearby during the same morning window. A wreck on southbound I-215 West at 3500 South in West Valley City briefly closed the right lane.

A third crash at the SR-201 and 2100 West interchange with I-215 in Salt Lake City closed the left shoulder. ABC4 described both as fairly minor compared with the 2900 South collision. A separate crash was also reported on eastbound I-80 at Bangerter Highway.

The Storm Prediction Center had issued a Marginal risk, level 2 of 6, for northern Utah on Friday, warning of potential damaging winds and hail. ABC4 meteorologist Cedric Haynes noted in a 7:40 a.m. briefing that the same risk level the day before had produced ping-pong-sized hail on the Wasatch Back.

Thunderstorms were expected to continue across northern Utah throughout Friday, with a cold front dropping daytime highs into the low-to-mid 70s. The effects reached beyond the highway. Alpine School District notified families that weather conditions were causing busing delays across the district.

Drivers on I-215 West also face UDOT's I-215 West Improved project, according to Gephardt Daily. The project is repaving multiple highway sections, replacing 18 bridge decks and repairing 12 additional bridges. Work is estimated to wrap up in late summer 2027.

ABC4's weather team forecast lingering moisture could bring more thunderstorms Saturday, Sept. 19, though less severe. Drier conditions are expected by Sunday.
