Millcreek could nearly double its annual funding for the Asian Association of Utah's after-school programs serving local students. The city council will take public comment on the proposed $200,000 contribution at a hearing Monday, August 10, at approximately 7 p.m. at City Hall, 1330 E. Chambers Ave.
That's a $90,000 jump.
The grant would increase from the $110,000 the council approved for the organization in August 2025, as we reported July 22.
The money would support seven after-school sites serving Millcreek students, according to a Bonneville Research appropriations study dated Tuesday, July 14. Those sites include Sunnyvale Neighborhood Center (serving both elementary and teen students), Evergreen Junior High, Olympus High School, William Penn Elementary, James E. Moss Elementary, and Utah International Charter School.
The Asian Association of Utah called the funding vital for the sustainability of its after-school operations and their ongoing impact on the Millcreek community, according to the study.
Robert Springmeyer, principal of Bonneville Research, prepared the study, which cites data showing after-school programs produce a 63% reduction in class skipping, a 44% decrease in drug use, and a 37% drop in youth involvement in criminal activities. It also references Brookings Institution and RAND Corporation research estimating every dollar spent on quality after-school programs yields $3 to $9 in long-term benefits.
A second hearing the same night
The council will also consider a $5,000 contribution for the Millcreek City 9/11 Day of Service during the same meeting, according to the official public hearing notice published July 22 by City Recorder Elyse Sullivan.
Both hearings are required under Utah Code Ann. § 10-8-2, which mandates a study before the city can provide grants to nonprofit organizations.
