Seniors from Millcreek's Evergreen Avenue center joined about 100 competitors from across Salt Lake County at the annual Senior Wellness Decathlon on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The competition, held at the Magna Kennecott Senior Center in Magna, drew participants from all 14 county senior centers, ABC4 reported. Competitors vied for gold, silver and bronze medals across 10 events: 9-ball pool, yard pong, Boggle, cornhole, horseshoes, axe throwing, shuffleboard, table tennis, Wii bowling and bingo.

The day also featured live music and a catered meal.

"It brings everybody together and is a chance for them to meet other seniors," Amanda Anderson, manager of the Magna Kennecott Senior Center, told ABC4.

Anderson, who has worked at the center for three years, told KSL the programs go beyond competition. She said she regularly talks with seniors who are lonely or grieving a spouse and encourages them to visit a center and reconnect.

Reigning decathlon champion Sherry Mousley skipped the competition this year. She chose to volunteer instead, running the Boggle station. Mousley told KSL she was the only competitor to win three gold medals in a single past decathlon and "I figured I had enough medals."

Salt Lake County's senior centers are free to join for adults 60 and older, according to Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services. They offer exercise classes, educational programs, dining and social activities.

The Millcreek Senior Center, at 2266 East Evergreen Ave., is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Residents can call 385-468-3305 for details. Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services is also seeking volunteers for its senior centers and Meals on Wheels program.
