A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Van Winkle Expressway at 1300 East on Thursday evening, July 30, and transported to a hospital in serious condition, the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office confirmed to ABC4.

The crash prompted the Utah Department of Transportation to close Van Winkle Expressway at the intersection. The closure was initially estimated to last until approximately 11:35 p.m., though a Sheriff's Office spokesperson said the road was expected to reopen sooner.

No driver details have been released.

The Sheriff's Office has not said whether any citations were issued or released information about the circumstances leading to the collision.

The crash is the third time in nine days that a pedestrian or cyclist has been seriously hurt or killed on roads near Millcreek.

On Saturday, July 25, a longboarder was fatally struck by a westbound sedan on 3900 South near 971 East at 11:57 p.m. The rider died at the scene. Sgt. Amyee Race of Unified Police told ABC4 on July 26 that "there were no reports of intoxication," and the driver remained on scene. As we reported July 26, police urged riders to use sidewalks and drivers to stay aware of their surroundings at night.

Three days before that, on Wednesday, July 22, a bicyclist was critically injured at 900 East and Fort Union Boulevard.

The Van Winkle Expressway crash location sits near the Millcreek-Holladay border. ABC4 datelined the incident in Holladay; the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office responded as the primary law enforcement agency.
