Millcreek residents dropped off more than five tons of hard-to-recycle waste in a single morning, keeping it all out of the landfill.

The Utah Recycling Alliance held a Collection of Hard-to-Recycle Materials event, known as CHaRM, on Saturday, May 16, at 1354 E. Chambers Ave. In three hours, 168 cars rolled through the drive-and-drop site, where 20 volunteers sorted items that curbside pickup won't accept.

The final tally: 10,215 pounds collected, a 38.6% increase over the 2025 event, the Millcreek Journal reported. Electronic waste and cords led the haul at 2,383 pounds. Scrap metal followed at 2,275 pounds, then paper shredding at 1,280 pounds and tires and tubes at 740 pounds.

The city of Millcreek co-hosted the event. Residents could also shred documents and dispose of old prescriptions on-site, according to the city's announcement on X.

No date has been announced for the next Millcreek CHaRM event. Salt Lake City Green has scheduled a separate CHaRM drive for Saturday, Sept. 19. Residents can check for upcoming Millcreek dates on the Utah Recycling Alliance website.
