Millcreek is throwing a free Pioneer Day party at Millcreek Common on Friday, July 24, with pie, root beer floats, live music and roller skating.

The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Plaza at Millcreek Common, 1354 E. Chambers Ave. Line dancing, games and skating will round out the evening, according to the city's event calendar and confirmed by KSL.com's Pioneer Day guide. Pie and floats are free while supplies last.

One thing residents won't find at the celebration: fireworks. Millcreek banned them for the Pioneer Day holiday period, citing fire conditions that have not improved since the Fourth of July. The city reported five fires since July 4, most of them human-caused, according to ABC4.

Photo contest opens in August

Beyond Pioneer Day, Millcreek's America250 programming stretches into late summer. The city announced its second annual photo contest on July 8, inviting residents to "capture what America means to you." Submissions open August 1, and close August 28. The contest is limited to Millcreek residents, one original entry per person. Winners will have their work displayed at City Hall and be recognized at a city council reception, according to the city's official social media account.

Nearby America250 events still running

Millcreek's celebrations are part of a countywide wave of Semiquincentennial programming, as reported by the Millcreek Journal on July 21.

Herriman City Hall, 5355 W. Main St., is displaying "The American Mosaic" through the end of July. The exhibit features artwork from residents of Herriman, Riverton, Bluffdale, West Jordan and South Jordan exploring what America means to them.

In Cottonwood Heights, the Red, White & Bloom program invites residents to nominate neighbors with patriotic yards. Winners will be announced in August. Details are at cottonwoodheights.utah.gov/community/america250.

The Museum of Utah, which opened June 27, at 450 N. State St. in Salt Lake City, continues to host the "Past is Personal" exhibit exploring the nation's history through remembering and perspective. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
