Millcreek residents heading out for Halloween weekend can claim a free $10 Lyft credit for a safe ride home.
The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS), AAA Utah and the Utah Restaurant Association launched the program Friday, Oct. 30. It runs through Sunday, Nov. 1. Patrons at participating bars and restaurants statewide can scan QR codes posted at the venues to access the credits, as first reported by ABC4.
AAA Utah is funding the initiative.
Extra troopers on the road
The credits come alongside a statewide enforcement push. More than 85 additional DUI enforcement shifts will be worked over the weekend, with 25 Utah law enforcement agencies participating, according to the DPS website. One DUI checkpoint is also planned.
Lt. Zach Randall of the Utah Highway Patrol said Halloween falling on a Saturday means more people will be out on the roads celebrating, according to KSL. Randall said extra troopers will be patrolling "specifically looking for impaired drivers and trying to find them before they hurt themselves or somebody else."
By the numbers
In 2025, 102 people were killed on Utah roads in crashes involving an impaired driver. Alcohol-related crashes in Utah are 15 times more likely to result in a fatality than other crashes, based on DPS data from 2021 through 2025.
As of Oct. 27, DPS has recorded 549 alcohol-related crashes and 42 drug- or alcohol-related fatalities in 2026, though those figures are preliminary. Separately, DUI arrest data shows 12,307 arrests in the state fiscal year ending June 30, with an average blood alcohol content of 0.14. Utah's legal limit is 0.05.
DPS estimates a night out with a rideshare home might cost around $50, while a DUI conviction can run $20,000 or more in attorney fees, fines, vehicle impound, towing and increased insurance premiums.
How to claim the credit
Look for campaign QR codes at participating bars and restaurants through Sunday, Nov. 1. Scanning the code directs users to the DPS website with redemption instructions. Alternatively, open the Lyft app, go to the Payment tab, select Lyft Pass and enter the code AAASAFERIDE.
Ben Nichols, a government affairs specialist with AAA Mountain West Group, said patrons can find the campaign materials at participating venues across the state.
Residents who see signs of impaired driving can call 911 or contact the Utah Highway Patrol.
