The Alpine Loop is closing for winter Monday morning, ending cross-canyon travel between American Fork Canyon and Provo Canyon until spring.
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced Oct. 29 that it will shut down SR-92 at 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2. The closure marks UDOT's first seasonal winter road shutdown of the year.
Gates will go up on the mountain section between Pine Hollow in American Fork Canyon and Aspen Grove above Sundance, according to a UDOT press release. That means drivers can no longer use the Alpine Loop to connect the two canyons.
Residents heading to Sundance can still get there through Provo Canyon. Tibble Fork Reservoir remains accessible from American Fork Canyon. Both routes depend on weather and road conditions.
UDOT closes several high-elevation roads each winter when heavy snow and fast-changing conditions make travel dangerous. The roads stay closed through winter, and reopening dates depend on weather, snowpack and maintenance needs.
The Alpine Loop closure comes on the heels of another seasonal shutdown. Guardsman Pass (SR-190), the route connecting Brighton to Park City, closed Friday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m., according to KUTV.
Several other state-managed seasonal roads remain open for now, according to UDOT's seasonal roads page. Those include the Mirror Lake Highway (SR-150), East Canyon (SR-65) and Wolf Creek Summit (SR-35). Each is listed as open until further notice.
Drivers can check current conditions at udottraffic.utah.gov before heading into the mountains.
