Lone Peak crushed Skyline 45-3 in a nonregion game Friday, Aug. 28. The loss dropped the Eagles to 1-2 on the season.

Skyline, picked as the preseason favorite to win Region 10, has now lost two of its first three games under first-year head coach Brandon Matich. Lone Peak improved to 2-1.

The Eagles struck first. Josh Pinnock drilled a 35-yard field goal late in the first quarter to give Skyline a 3-0 lead. It was their only score of the night.

Lone Peak quarterback Cruz Christensen answered with 20 seconds left in the quarter, hitting Krew Robinson on a 6-yard touchdown pass to put the Knights ahead for good. Christensen threw two more touchdown passes in the second quarter as Lone Peak piled up 24 points in the period, turning a competitive game into a blowout before halftime.

Marshall Durfey extended the lead with a 41-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, according to the Deseret News.

The 42-point loss stands in stark contrast to the expectations Skyline carried into 2026. The Eagles finished 9-4 last season, reaching the 4A quarterfinals, and returned eight starters on offense and six on defense. That group includes Honorable Mention All-State running back Jonah Mailei, who rushed for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns in 2025. Transfer quarterback Tate Johnson, who threw for 1,973 yards and 18 touchdowns at Mountain View last year, was expected to elevate the offense.

Johnson showed flashes in the first two weeks. He threw a touchdown pass in the season-opening 14-10 loss to Stansbury on Aug. 14 and powered Skyline past rival Olympus in the Battle of the Rock on Aug. 21. Against Lone Peak, the Eagles did not score again after Pinnock's field goal.

Matich told the Deseret News on Aug. 1 that the team would need to stay healthy and fight through a difficult preseason to reach its potential. Three games in, Skyline has lost two of three.

Skyline travels to Juan Diego in Draper on Friday, Sept. 4, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
