A man was struck and killed while crossing 700 East near 4100 South in Millcreek late Monday, Sept. 28.

First responders reached the scene at approximately 11:51 p.m. after receiving reports of the crash, according to Sgt. Amyee Race, public information officer for the Unified Police Department. Officers found the victim dead in the northbound lanes of 700 East, as Gephardt Daily first reported.

The pedestrian was crossing the street outside a crosswalk when he was struck, KUTV reported, citing Race. Emergency crews provided medical aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained and was cooperating with investigators, according to KUTV's report citing Race. Investigators do not suspect alcohol or impairment played a role in the crash.

The Unified Police Department's Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) processed the site. Both directions of 700 East were closed while the team worked the scene. A Gephardt Daily photograph showed police SUVs with flashing red and blue lights and orange traffic cones lining the road near the crash site. The department had not announced when the road reopened.

Race said the pedestrian's identity had not been released as of Tuesday, Sept. 29, pending notification of family members. The driver's identity also had not been made public.

Police have not released the vehicle type, its direction of travel or its speed. The investigation remains ongoing, and no timeline for its completion has been announced.

Race urged pedestrians to use designated crosswalks and look both ways before crossing. She also cautioned drivers to stay alert and watch for pedestrians.
