Skyline Eagles girls soccer opens a new chapter Tuesday when first-year head coach Jordyn Roth leads the program onto the field at Cyprus High School, three days after wrapping tryouts for a squad she hopes can climb out of the 5A basement.

The Eagles finished 1-17 overall last season and went winless in Region 6 play at 0-12, ranking 29th out of 30 teams in the 5A RPI. They did not qualify for the state tournament. The offense managed just 1.1 goals per game while allowing 3.0.

That was the final season of the post-Yamil Castillo era. Castillo built Skyline into a dynasty, winning four state championships (2015, 2019, 2021, 2022) before his departure. The program holds five 5A titles overall, the most recent just four years ago.

Now Roth, one of seven new 5A girls soccer coaches this season, inherits the rebuild. She told the Deseret News in preseason capsules published Aug. 1: "We're feeling really positive about starting fresh and are looking forward to surprising watchers."

Roth declined to name specific returning players or newcomers, citing her newness to the program, but said she is counting on talented returners and is excited to welcome large groups of underclassmen. Tryouts ran July 28 through July 31 at the school's fields near the mouth of Millcreek Canyon, with double sessions on the first two days.

The path back won't be short. Region 6 produced both 2025 state finalists: champion Bountiful (14-5, 10-2 in region) and runner-up Olympus (15-5, 11-1), Skyline's crosstown rival. Brighton (14-6) also reached the quarterfinals. Bountiful coach Kris Hamlet acknowledged in the same Deseret News capsule that his Redhawks lost key seniors but said the team will "work extra hard" to compete in what he called "a very difficult Region."

The Eagles' opener is Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 3:30 p.m. at Cyprus High School in Magna. Their home schedule begins Thursday, Aug. 13, against Waterford School. The 5A state semifinals are set for Monday, Oct. 19, at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, with the championship final Friday, Oct. 23.
