Skyline's football team holds first place in 4A Region 10 at 3-0, carrying a 4-3 overall record into Friday, Oct. 2, when the Eagles host East.

Head coach Brandon Matich faces his former program. Matich spent 15 years at East from 2010 to 2024, compiling a 128-60 record with state championships in 2015 and 2016, according to a Deseret News preseason preview. He is in his 20th season as a head coach in Utah and was the preseason No. 1 pick in the Region 10 coaches poll.

The Eagles opened the year with a 21-16 win over rival Olympus on Aug. 21 at Olympus, a rivalry that dates to 1962. Skyline trailed 2-0 at halftime on an Olympus safety before the offense broke through in the second half.

"Tate Johnson did an amazing job of stepping up and making plays," Matich said after the game, according to Yahoo Sports.

The Eagles have picked up steam since. Skyline routed Jordan 55-12 on Sept. 19, a game in which running back Saia Vake scored two rushing touchdowns, according to KSL. The program's all-time record entering 2026 stood at 482-244-1 across 64 years, with 14 state titles.

Junior linebacker Nick Tueller, listed as a key defensive newcomer in the preseason, told The Skyline Horizon the team has put in work this season.

Off the field, students returned Aug. 12 to a completed new building. The campus features a grassy knoll, new floors and an expanded parking lot with a new exit onto Upland Drive. Sixteen new staff members joined Skyline for the 2026-2027 school year.

New physics teacher Ryan Hatt offered a simple review in the school newspaper: "The building is so nice."

Not everything is smooth. On the first day of school, it took more than 30 minutes to clear the parking lot. Senior Niim Eggert told The Skyline Horizon the congestion has not let up, saying she cannot get to school on time.

Skyline's schedule shows the Eagles at Highland on Thursday, Oct. 8, then home against Murray on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
