Unified Police identified the man killed in a crash the night of Monday, Sept. 28, at 4100 South and 700 East in Millcreek as Jason Garcia, 55, of West Valley City.
Garcia's identity was first reported by Gephardt Daily on Wednesday, Sept. 30, after family notification was completed. Sgt. Aymee Race, a Unified Police Department (UPD) spokeswoman, said in Sept. 29 statements that officers responded to the crash involving a pedestrian at approximately 11:51 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found Garcia dead in the northbound lanes of 700 East. First responders performed lifesaving measures at the scene, but Garcia was pronounced dead, ABC4 reported.
Garcia was crossing 700 East outside of a crosswalk when a vehicle struck him, according to KUTV.
The driver, who has not been publicly identified, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to Sgt. Race's Sept. 29 statements. Investigators do not suspect alcohol or impairment played a role in the crash.
The UPD's Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) processed the scene after the collision. The roadway was closed in both directions for several hours while the team examined the site, according to Gephardt Daily and ABC4.
The 4100 South and 700 East intersection sits along one of Millcreek's busier north-south corridors. The crash occurred late at night, with dispatch receiving the call just before midnight.
Sgt. Race described the crash as happening under "unfortunate circumstances" in initial statements on Sept. 29. She urged pedestrians to use designated crosswalks and look both ways before crossing. She also cautioned drivers to stay alert and watch for pedestrians, according to KUTV's coverage of her Sept. 29 remarks.
No charges have been announced. The driver's identity has not been released. The investigation remains open, and police have not provided a timeline for further updates.
Residents with information about the crash can contact the Unified Police Department.
