Skyline High graduate Ashley Lam advanced to the Elite Eight at the 120th Utah Women's State Amateur on Tuesday, July 21, winning two match-play rounds at Oakridge Country Club in Farmington and setting up an all-Salt Lake City quarterfinal Wednesday morning.

Lam, a sophomore at Westminster University and the tournament's No. 23 seed, knocked off No. 10 Jane Olson 2 up in the morning round, then dominated No. 26 Natalie McLane 5 and 4 in the afternoon. She'll face Salt Lake City's Rosie Oettli, a Cottonwood High alumna and No. 18 seed, at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Oakridge.

It was a day of upsets across the bracket. Defending champion Arden Louchheim fell in the Round of 32, losing 2 up to Adley Nelson. Stroke-play medalist Braylyn Bayer was eliminated by BYU's Ava Schroeder, 2 and 1.

Lam's Westminster teammate Remi Rawlings also competed but was eliminated in the Round of 32, falling to Sydney Richards 8 and 7.

Oettli, who played college golf at Southern Virginia from 2019 to 2022, advanced by defeating Taylor Weingarten 2 and 1 and BYU golfer Aadyn Long 1 up. That's the same Aadyn Long whom Lam beat as a 13-year-old at the 2020 Utah State Junior Amateur.

The Taylorsville native has built an impressive resume since her days at Skyline. In her freshman year at Westminster, Lam swept RMAC Freshman of the Year and Golfer of the Year honors and won the conference championship at 8 under par, according to the Westminster athletics department. She placed 22nd out of 111 competitors at the NCAA West Regional that season.

During her sophomore season, Lam won the RMAC title for the second consecutive time, leading the Griffins to a second-place team finish. In September 2025, she was named the conference's first Women's Golfer of the Week after winning the Wolverine Invitational against an all-Division I field, setting a Westminster school record with a low round of 66.

"The big goal is to go pro someday," Lam told the Millcreek Journal in a May 28 profile about her sophomore season at Westminster.

Lam started playing golf at age 10, following her father Dat and older brother Sean to the course. She practices regularly at Fore Lakes Golf Course in Taylorsville. Lam developed her game in Skyline's program, which has won three UHSAA state titles since 2023.
