Skyline's first-round Class 4A playoff game Friday projects as a near coin flip. The Eagles host Pine View at 4 p.m., separated by just 1.3 points in the Parry's Power Guide computer ratings.
The Deseret News' Parry's Power Guide, published Oct. 26 by Noland Parry, rates Skyline at 80.4 and Pine View at 79.1. That 1.3-point gap makes it one of the tightest matchups among the eight Class 4A first-round games. Deseret News high school sports editor James Edward picks Pine View to pull the upset.
The Eagles (7-3, 6-0 Region 10) enter the postseason as the No. 6 seed on a five-game win streak. They clinched their first region championship in 14 years under first-year head coach Brandon Matich, going unbeaten through Region 10 play after a 1-3 start against nonregion opponents.
Senior quarterback Tate Johnson has thrown for 1,400 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, spreading the ball to 12 receivers. Senior Will Finau leads that group with 440 receiving yards and four touchdowns. On the ground, the Eagles have piled up more than 1,400 rushing yards split among 14 ball carriers, according to the Millcreek Journal.
Skyline has outscored opponents 354-178 this season, according to MaxPreps. The defense has eight sacks, 43 tackles for loss and eight interceptions from seven different players.
Pine View (5-4, 2-3 Region 9) travels north from St. George as the No. 11 seed. The Panthers finished fourth in Region 9 and enter on a one-game losing streak after falling to Crimson Cliffs 49-36 on Oct. 14. Pine View has scored 360 points this season but allowed 318, according to MaxPreps.
The road has been kinder to Pine View. The Panthers are 4-1 away from home compared to 1-3 at their own stadium. Their road wins include a 59-29 victory at Logan and a 45-40 result at Desert Hills.
The Herald Extra's Preece Power Poll reflects the teams' diverging trajectories. Skyline jumped 17 spots from its midseason ranking, one of the biggest climbs in the state. Pine View dropped 10 spots.
Kickoff is Friday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m. at Skyline High School, 3251 E. 3760 South. The winner advances to the Class 4A quarterfinals.
