Joe Kerry resigned from the Utah State Board of Education on Monday, Sept. 14, and dropped his bid for reelection to the District 2 seat he held in Weber County.
Kerry, a Republican, announced the decision on his Facebook page on Friday, Sept. 11, writing that he is moving to a different part of the state to care for his mother, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
His departure leaves a vacancy on the 15-member board that sets curriculum standards, educator licensing rules and high school graduation requirements for every public school in Utah. That includes Granite School District schools across Millcreek.
Kerry's District 2 does not directly cover Granite SD. Six other state board districts — 5 through 10 — represent the schools Millcreek families attend, according to the district's legislative guide. But the full board votes on statewide policy that applies to all districts, and one empty seat shifts the math on any close vote over standards or licensing changes that reach Millcreek classrooms.
What happens next
Under Utah Code Section 20A-1-504, the governor fills a state board vacancy by appointing someone who meets the seat's qualifications and residency requirements, with the advice and consent of the Senate. The appointee serves until the next regular general election, when voters fill the unexpired term.
No timeline has been announced for the governor's appointment. Kerry's withdrawal also removes him from the November 2026 ballot. No other candidates for the District 2 seat have been publicly identified, and the process for adjusting the ballot has not been announced.
The Granite School District board, meanwhile, is dealing with its own vacancy. As we reported Sept. 13, the local board met Tuesday with its District 1 seat still unfilled.
