Wildfire smoke blanketing the Wasatch Front pushed Millcreek's air quality into the orange zone Monday morning, August 3, activating UHSAA guidance that directs high school coaches to modify outdoor practices during the peak of fall preseason.

The Air Quality Index in Millcreek registered "unhealthy for sensitive groups" at 8 a.m., according to ABC4. Teenagers are explicitly named as a sensitive group in the advisory. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality expects conditions to persist across Salt Lake County through Wednesday, August 5.

That timeline lands squarely in the middle of preseason camp for the Skyline Eagles, with Granite School District's first day of school just nine days away on August 12.

What the rules say

The Utah High School Activities Association's air quality guidance is clear: at AQI 101–150, coaches must consult with all athletes and modify practice and competition. If readings climb to 151–200, the UHSAA directs coaches to postpone or cancel outdoor activities entirely.

The Utah Department of Health and Human Services advises teenagers to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion, take more breaks, and switch to less intense activities outdoors. Symptoms to watch for include coughing and shortness of breath.

Eagles in the thick of preseason

The advisory hits as Skyline football enters its first preseason camp under head coach Brandon Matich, who took over a program that went 9-4 last season and was picked to win Region 10 in the preseason coaches poll. The Eagles return eight offensive starters and six on defense, including senior running back Jonah Mailei and transfer quarterback Tate Johnson.

"If we can stay healthy and learn to fight through adverse conditions and a difficult pre-season… this team has a chance to be really successful," Matich said in the Deseret News' August 1 Region 10 preview, speaking about the season ahead before the smoke rolled in.

First-year girls soccer coach Jordyn Roth faces the same challenge as she builds a Skyline program that went 1-17 in 2025. Her squad is in preseason camp with large groups of underclassmen, according to the Deseret News' 5A girls soccer preview.

What we don't know yet

Neither Skyline's athletic department nor coaches Matich and Roth have publicly commented on specific practice modifications in response to Monday's advisory. It's also unclear whether Millcreek-area youth recreational leagues have adjusted schedules. Granite School District has not issued a district-wide statement on preseason athletic protocols during the advisory.

The bigger picture

Smoke from wildfires burning in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Wyoming is driving the poor air across much of Utah. Nearby communities including West Jordan, Midvale, Sandy, and Draper registered even worse readings Monday morning, hitting the "unhealthy" tier where everyone is affected.

The advisory is expected to lift after Wednesday, August 5. Skyline's football and girls soccer teams open their regular seasons later in August.
