A six-week class on managing chronic pain starts Monday, Oct. 5, at the Millcreek Community Center, 2266 East Evergreen Ave. (3435 South).
The "Living Well with Chronic Pain" program runs weekly through Monday, Nov. 9. It is open to adults living with any type of chronic pain and to their caregivers. The class is free, according to the state's Living Well program.
The program is part of Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services' Health Promotion class series. Lauren Glover of Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services was listed as a registration contact in the county's February newsletter at 385-468-3078.
The curriculum was developed at Stanford University and is overseen statewide by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, according to Utah State University Extension. The Utah Healthy Aging Program lists it as an evidence-based program.
Two trained peer facilitators lead each session. At least one facilitator lives with chronic pain, according to the program description from the University of New Hampshire Extension.
The program covers strategies for dealing with fatigue, poor sleep and frustration, along with physical activity, nutrition, medication use and communication with health professionals. It targets adults 18 and older with conditions such as arthritis, back pain and headaches, according to the National Council on Aging.
