A woman was shot in the chest early Sunday, Oct. 4, in a parking lot near 4500 South and 700 East, and a suspect now faces attempted murder charges.
Davon Hakeem Hinton was arrested Sunday evening after allegedly shooting the woman and fleeing the scene, according to a probable cause affidavit first reported by ABC4. Officers from both the Unified Police Department, which serves Millcreek, and the Murray Police Department responded to the scene just after midnight.
The victim was found on the sidewalk outside 622 E. 4500 S. with a gunshot wound to her chest. She was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where she was in stable condition, according to the affidavit.
The address sits near the Murray-Millcreek boundary, and both departments responded. UPD had initially been dispatched to 3900 S. 700 E. before the location was updated as officers arrived, according to scanner traffic reported by SLCScanner on X.
What the affidavit alleges
The victim had attended a party earlier in the day with two women, according to the affidavit. One of the women drove the group toward the victim's home but stopped in the parking lot to meet Hinton.
A verbal argument broke out.
As the victim got into her vehicle to leave, Hinton allegedly shot her in the chest and fled. The victim identified Hinton as the shooter to responding officers. Police later located Hinton's girlfriend, who also identified him and confirmed he had arrived and left in her white Nissan Maxima.
Arrest in Clearfield
While officers spoke with the girlfriend, Hinton contacted her and attempted to convince her not to talk to police, according to the affidavit. That conversation led officers to an address in Clearfield, where they found the Nissan Maxima.
With the resident's permission, officers searched the home and found Hinton hiding in the hatch area of a Honda Pilot inside the garage. He fled to the backyard and climbed onto the roof after officers deployed pepper balls and breached the vehicle window with less-lethal munitions.
After prolonged negotiations and additional less-lethal measures, Hinton surrendered. A shelter-in-place order issued during the standoff was lifted after he was taken into custody.
Charges filed
Hinton faces charges of attempted murder, prohibited dangerous weapon conduct (a charge related to possessing a weapon he was legally barred from having), improper discharge of a dangerous weapon, witness tampering and interfering with a peace officer. Court records note he qualifies as a firearm-restricted person based on his criminal history. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Sunday evening.
The victim's name has not been released. No arraignment date was available as of Monday, Oct. 5. Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Unified Police Department at 385-468-9820.
