Skyline quarterback Tate Johnson threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth as the Eagles routed East 49-12 in Region 10 play Friday, Oct. 2.
The win pushed Skyline to 5-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in region, extending the Eagles' winning streak to three games with two regular-season games left, according to MaxPreps.
Johnson connected with David Campbell on a 41-yard touchdown, and also found Xander Mattinson and Will Finau for scores. East's Brody Blaylock cut the deficit to two points with a 4-yard touchdown run, but Skyline pulled away from there, the Deseret News reported.
Judah Valle added a 67-yard kick return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles' defense held East scoreless for three straight quarters after Blaylock's score.
East fell to 1-6.
The game marked first-year Skyline head coach Brandon Matich's first time coaching against East since leaving the program. Matich spent 15 seasons leading the Leopards, compiling a 138-60 record and winning state titles in 2015 and 2016 before stepping down in June 2025. He started his coaching career at Skyline in 1997 under Hall of Fame coach Roger DuPaix, according to the Millcreek Journal.
Johnson has started all eight games at quarterback for Skyline this season. After the Eagles' 21-16 win over Olympus on Aug. 21, Matich praised his quarterback's ability to adjust.
"We challenged them at half to just take the short throws and be on time … Tate Johnson did an amazing job of stepping up and making plays," Matich said after the Olympus win, per the Deseret News.
Through eight games, Skyline has outscored opponents 276-148. MaxPreps lists the Eagles second in 4A Region 10. Highland beat Juan Diego 62-0 on Friday to improve to 7-1 overall and is listed first in the region.
The two teams meet Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. at Highland in a game with region-title implications. Skyline closes the regular season at home against Murray on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
