Families scrambling to outfit growing kids before school starts have a free option at Midvale City Park on Saturday, Aug. 8: bring outgrown clothes, leave with the next size up.
The Family Support Center is hosting its Back to School Family Field Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park, located at 425 6th Avenue in Midvale. Everything is free.
The clothing swap is the practical draw. Parents bring gently used children's clothing their kids have outgrown and trade for sizes they need. The nonprofit said it especially needs preteen and teen sizes, including boys' clothing, according to a post on its LinkedIn page.
Granite School District classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 12, giving families just four days to get wardrobes sorted after the field day.
Beyond the swap, the event includes lawn and field games, cotton candy, hot dogs, face painting and prizes. The Family Support Center described the day as a way to stretch back-to-school budgets in its event listing on the Millcreek Journal.
The nonprofit, which operates Crisis Nurseries across Salt Lake County, serves families in Millcreek, Midvale and surrounding communities.
Residents who missed the early donation window (8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the park) can still bring clothing to the Family Support Center's Taylorsville offices.
The organization is also collecting children's winter coats and Halloween costumes for a fall event called Coats, Costumes, Cookies and Cocoa. No date has been announced for that drive.
