A 10-week tai chi class that helps reduce falls and ease arthritis pain begins Monday, Aug. 24, at the Millcreek Community Center on Evergreen Avenue.

The Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention program is free for adults 60 and older and meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. through Nov. 4 at the center, 2266 E. Evergreen Ave., according to the Millcreek Journal event listing. The facility is also known as the Millcreek Senior Center and is operated by Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services.

The program, developed by Dr. Paul Lam at the Tai Chi for Health Institute, uses Sun-style tai chi with a higher stance that is safer and more comfortable for older adults. The CDC recognizes it as evidence-based for fall prevention. A large study cited by the Tai Chi for Health Institute found recurring falls were reduced by nearly 70% among participants.

The CDC reports 1 in 4 adults over 65 falls each year.

The National Council on Aging says the program improves balance, mobility, strength and flexibility while decreasing pain. Movements can be modified for mobility issues or done seated, making it accessible at varying ability levels. Participants are encouraged to practice at home for half an hour daily, at least four days per week, in addition to attending class.

The center, managed by Matt Waite, offers a range of fitness programming for older adults, including yoga, ballet, line dancing and senior fitness classes.

The same tai chi program ran at the Taylorsville Senior Center from June 2 through July 23, and a virtual session continues through Aug. 27. The Millcreek session is a separate, in-person offering at this location for the fall.
