Skyline's Elle Scott and Sophie Heimburger won the No. 1 doubles title at the UHSAA 5A Girls Tennis State Championship on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The Eagles finished third as a team with 43 points, one point behind runner-up Hillcrest and 13 behind champion Woods Cross, which scored 56 to claim its third consecutive team title. The tournament was held at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

Scott and Heimburger defeated Woods Cross' Liza Eyring and Lillie Bennion in the doubles final. The match score was not reported in available results.

The doubles title was Skyline's top result of the tournament. Sofia Stahle also competed for the Eagles in the No. 1 singles semifinal, though her result was not included in the published bracket, first reported by the Deseret News. Head coach Pam Waterman guided Skyline through the two-day event.

Woods Cross used depth across the lineup to pull away. Sophomore Lyla Bergeson won her second straight No. 1 singles championship, beating Hillcrest's Luciana Gonzalez 6-1, 6-3 in the final after dropping zero games in her first four matches. The Wildcats' No. 2 doubles team of Libby Derrick and Ellen Pugsley also won their bracket.

Hillcrest picked up two individual titles: Joshya Yerrapureddy in No. 2 singles and Nivedita Bakshi in No. 3 singles.

Final 5A team standings: Woods Cross 56, Hillcrest 44, Skyline 43, Timpview 28, Bountiful 15.

Woods Cross coach Jim Romera praised the level of play across the tournament, according to the Deseret News.

The state championship closes the fall girls tennis season for Skyline.
