Millcreek-area drivers heading to Salt Lake International Airport will lose a primary northbound I-215 connection to I-80 for more than a month starting Tuesday, July 28.

The Utah Department of Transportation announced it will close three northbound I-215 off-ramps at 8 p.m. Tuesday for bridge deck replacement work. The closures affect a corridor that Millcreek residents routinely use to reach the airport and points west.

Here's what's closing:

  • Northbound I-215 to westbound I-80 (what UDOT calls a primary route to the airport): closed approximately 35 days, expected to reopen shortly before Labor Day.
  • Northbound I-215 to eastbound I-80: closed approximately 35 days, same timeline.
  • Northbound I-215 to Redwood Road: closed through Friday, October 2.

UDOT is directing airport-bound drivers to use Bangerter Highway, I-15, or SR-201 as alternates during the closure.

A fourth ramp at the same interchange, Redwood Road to northbound I-215, is already closed and will remain shut through July 2027.

Part of a larger project

The ramp closures are part of the I-215 West Improved project, a two-year effort to reconstruct three miles of I-215 from SR-201 to North Temple, improve 14 miles of ramps, and replace 18 bridge decks and repair 12 additional bridges across the corridor. Construction began July 28, 2025, and is scheduled to wrap up in late summer 2027.

UDOT Project Manager John Montoya said in the agency's July 27 announcement that bridge maintenance is central to the project's purpose.

"Staying ahead of that maintenance helps keep our transportation system safe and reliable, and helps us get the most from the infrastructure Utahns have already invested in," Montoya said.

As of June 2026, UDOT reported the project had reached its halfway point, with 13 bridges completed and traffic shifted onto newly rebuilt pavement.
