Millcreek's fire agency is heading to Oregon.

The Unified Fire Authority is among more than a dozen Utah fire departments deploying crews to fight wildfires burning across Oregon, ABC4 Utah reported Wednesday, July 29, citing the Utah Department of Public Safety. The 14-day assignment pulls firefighters away from a state already experiencing its worst wildfire season on record.

Two task forces of Utah firefighters will provide structural protection for Oregon communities threatened by wildfire. The crews are tasked with defending homes and buildings rather than fighting fire directly on the fire line. The expected return date is around Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Oregon's Department of State Fire Marshal requested up to three Type III or IV Engine task forces through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a congressionally ratified agreement that allows states to share personnel during governor-declared emergencies. Utah is providing two of the three requested.

What it means for Millcreek

UFA is Utah's largest fire agency, with 694 employees serving 16 communities including Millcreek. The Department of Public Safety has not disclosed how many UFA firefighters specifically are deploying or which stations may be affected.

The deployment comes during a period of heavy local demand. On the night of Sunday, July 12 into Monday, July 13, Unified Fire responded to three major fires within nine hours in the Millcreek area: the Tanner Brush Fire at 5:53 p.m., a house fire at 8:45 p.m., and a second house fire at 3:30 a.m., according to SLCScanner, a local emergency-radio monitoring account on X.

A built-in safeguard

DPS retains the authority to recall both task forces early if Utah faces its own wildfire emergency. Under EMAC rules, an assisting state can withhold or pull back resources to maintain its own protection, according to FEMA documentation on the compact. Oregon reimburses Utah for deployment costs, and deployed firefighters keep their home-state workers' compensation protections.

Utah's record fire season

The deployment happens against a backdrop of unprecedented fire activity at home. Utah wildfires had burned more than 380,000 acres by late July, surpassing the combined total from 2021 through 2025, according to KUER 90.1 and Utah Fire Info data reported by Fox 13.

"We're seeing fire growth up to 30,000 acres in a day, which we haven't seen in a very long time, if ever," Kelly Wickens, a fire prevention specialist with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, told KUER in a July 7 report on the record season.

As we reported Wednesday, the record season has already prompted tighter fire restrictions for Millcreek Canyon visitors.

Oregon's crisis

Oregon wildfires have burned more than 1.5 million acres, with thousands of residents under evacuation orders, OPB reported. The Fox Fire near the Idaho border closed 70 miles of Interstate 84 and forced the evacuation of Huntington, a town of about 500 people, according to the Standard Speaker. That fire was 0% contained as of Monday, July 27.

Other Utah agencies joining the deployment include crews from Salt Lake City, Sandy, West Valley City, Draper, Orem, Layton, Park City, South Jordan, Syracuse, Moab Valley, North Tooele, and Utah County.
